Salal

Gaultheria shallon

Native Pollinator

Delicate pinkish-white urn shaped flowers bloom late spring to early summer and are attractive to butterflies. Blackish-blue berries which follow are eaten by many birds and mammals. This ubiquitous evergreen shrub varies in height, staying shorter in sunny areas and growing taller in the shade. Salal is useful as a groundcover, though it can be slow to establish and will need good drainage.
